browser compatibility and rendering quality

Regular rendering checks

A well designed, coherent and non-bugged page is very desirable, so it is only wise that the web designer verifies that most browsers do render it correctly.

Currently I'm using Safari and Mozilla Firefox 3 regularly, but I also use Opera and (since the last few days) Google Chrome often. Obviously these are the browsers with which I check that this website is showing up correctly, including the small bits of Javascript I've included so far.

The table below is a list of screen shots of how the most commonly used browsers render the website. For every browser, I have included a list of their respective versions with which I verified if the rendering is correct. In bold is the latest version that I've tested.

The truth is that no Internet Explorer ever rendered my website well. This stands across three major versions: 6, 7 (betas and final) and 8 beta.

Lost case

Microsoft Internet Explorer logo

Not a surprise for many... maybe to some; Microsoft Internet Explorer has to be THE worst browser around. I'll spare myself from referring to versions up to and including IE 5.5, due to horrible performance and standard compliance.

Version 7.0 was supposed to be the one: secure, standards compliant, the only browser anyone would ever need. Version 8.0 final is nearly released and things still don't work well... Is there any hope for Internet Explorer?

Let me make myself clear: Other than rare and small (but still standard) tweaks, I do not make any effort whatsoever to make my website appear correctly on Internet Explorer. The browser is buggy, its HTML/CSS implementation is broken and it follows its own non-standard rules. It is not my website that is broken or the standards compliant open source or free browsers available, it is Internet Explorer that is broken, and that is not my fault. From that perspective, there is nothing to fix on my website. Sorry about that.

The long rant I wrote about Internet Explorer still stands, but I have taken it out because it just is noti - in any way - productive.
